Human Anatomy Moviepalooza Lesson May 11, 2008

This week we will go into uncharted territory for me as a teacher, but I want to take a chance with this outstanding group of students that I have to finish out our year with a final project. After watching the school play last week I had a kernel of an idea to have the students make short informational movies to finish out the final four sections of the book that are required. We talked about it in class on Friday and the students brainstormed some excellent ideas, so we will try “Human Anatomy Moviepalooza 2008”, a short film festival. I will handle the reproduction section for reasons that should be obvious to anyone who knows the sense of humor of 13 year olds in regard to this subject. But the other sections can easily be taught using short films…. this is why Bill Nye the Science Guy is famous. Some excellent student movies you can check out are at http://tinyurl.com/6yxc7e
Anyway we will have three phases of work to do covering the following chapters over the next few weeks..

Excretory System ( pages 577-586)
Control and Coordination (592-615)
Reproduction(My Movie)
Immunity and Disease (650-677)

Students will work in groups of their own choosing and we will follow a rough schedule until I get a better handle on how they are doing and how much they are able to accomplish. Students who for some reason cannot work with others will be placed first in my group to help with reproduction and if they are unable to function with my group will be given the student workbook for self paced instruction.
As long as students are engaged in the project, they are allowed to move about the class to gather materials, do research, brainstorm, and collaborate with one another.

This Week…
Pre-Production
1.Develop and give a one-minute oral presentation about their idea on “Pitch Day.” The students in the audience are required to take notes and provide critical feedback on areas in the presentation they feel are weak.

2. Each student is required to write a 1-2 page summary to describe the story and the characters. I want them to know what the story is about, who the characters are, and where they live.

3. Create an outline. Each student develops one from the main points of the summary. This document is used to help provide direction and focus for the script.

4. Write the script using information from the textbook throughout the movie. The main focus of these movies is to provide information in an entertaining way. Many students struggle with writing realistic dialog. We break up into small groups during this time period to read through the scripts and offer advice on how to fix potential problems.
**Students might want to check out this freeware for script writing on their computers**
http://www.celtx.com/

5. Create storyboards. Students are required to do this so they will begin to visualize each shot. It helps them take a story from a 2-D environment on paper to a 3-D setting, which is the real world.

6. Secure production crew and actors/actresses for the show.

7. Create a production schedule, shot list, and equipment list.

It should be an interesting week…
